Among the very first 335 copies manufactured by Crucianelli there are strangely many with a bass neck bolted on. Vox marketed this bass version under the name Cougar. Here are some very interesting examples. Headstocks are of the narrow kind. The black plastic truss-rod plate is like the one that was in use until late 1963 on the old Crucianelli solidbodies. Even more surprinsingly, the Cougar on the left has old plastic buttons on his tuners. A date of manufacture in early 1964 is therefore plausible.

It follows that Crucianelli started building complete Vox guitars about one year before Eko. At that time Crucianelli was in need of new productions due to the shrinking accordion market, while Eko was facing a booming demand for its guitars and was preparing to leave its overcrowded facility to a much larger manufacturing site that opened early 1965.

Fra le primissime casse in stile 335 sfornate dalla Crucianelli sono stranamente numerose quelle dotate di un manico di basso. Vox vendeva questa versione basso sotto il nome Cougar. Eccone due esempi interessantissimi. Le palette sono del tipo ristretto. La piastra del truss-rod, in plastica nera, è quella che è usata fino al 1964 sulle vecchie solidbodies. Ancora più sorprendente, il Cougar a sinistra é attrezzato con antiche chiavette di plastica, il che potrebbe significare che è stato costruito già all’inizio del 1964.

Possiamo concludere che Crucianelli ha cominciato a fornire chitarre complete per Vox circa un anno prima di Eko. Crucianelli era allora alla ricerca di nuove produzioni per compensare il declino della fisarmonica, mentre Eko, di fronte al successo crescente delle sue chitarre, stava preparandosi a lasciare la sua fabbrica sovraccaricata per sistemarsi nel sito ben più ampio aperto all’inizio del 1965.
