This Supreme 40-V summarizes the many difficulties to be met when trying to investigate about this series. The old-style neck with a volute and a rounded-off headstock is fitted with a zero-fret that shouldn’t be there -- unless it is a transitional configuration before the second style neck (with angled headstock), as suggested by the thin brown nut and the string-tree. However such transition necks are normally not seen with the old style pickups…

Body is silver finished on both sides. Being black, the back of the neck has thus another colour than the body, which is quite unusual. Scratchplate is new style (follows upper body edge) while the tremolo unit is still old style. Compare to the blue Élite 40-V that has still the old pickguard but already the newer tremolo!

Compare also with the other silver Supremo we have here. This two-pickup hardtail version shows a more sensible configuration with its all black back and the white fretboard binding, except that with the second generation pickups (six-slit model of 1964-65) a zero-fret ought to be there.

Questa Supreme 40-V è un esempio delle tante difficoltà incontrate quando si tenta di indagare su questa serie. Il manico vecchio stile con voluta e paletta arrontondata è dotato del tasto zero che non dovrebbe avere – si potrebbe trattare, allora, di una configurazione di transizione verso il manico nello stile successivo (con palettta angolata), così come è suggerito dal piccolo capotasto bruno e dall'abbassa-corde. Però un manico transizionale come questo non si dovrebbe vedere normalmente con i pickups più vecchi…

La finitura del corpo è argento su entrambi i lati. Il retro nero del manico ha dunque colore diverso dal corpo, cosa perlomeno insolita. La mascherina è del tipo nuovo (segue il profilo superiore del corpo) mentre il vibrato è ancora del tipo primitivo. Confrontatela con la Élite 40-V blù che ha ancora la mascherina vecchia ma già il vibrato più recente!

Confrontatela anche con la seconda Supremo argento che presenta una configurazione a due pickups senza vibrato, più ragionevole con il suo retro interamente nero e il binding bianco al manico, salvo che con i pickup di seconda generazione (modello a 6 aperture del 1964-65) ci si sarebbe aspettato un tasto zero .
