The Bartolini Enigma

All guitar making operations in the Castelfidardo-Recanati district can be traced back in some way to one of the many accordion businesses that flourished in the area. All of them, except Bartolini.

This name has never been seen is the local squeeze-box dynasties. It would be nice to find some link with Bill Bartolini, the Californian luthier who became very successful in the 70’s with its bass pickups, but there is none.

All we know is that the (nearly unreadable) logo ‘BAR’ is the acronym for ‘Bartolini Alvaro, Recanati’, which means that the company was located in Recanati, like Eko. It took us years before we reached this stage of knowledge. We are not yet sure if ‘Alvaro’ was Signor Bartolini’s Christian name or the name of some associate (which is less likely) but sooner or later we will make it sure, we swear.

The most beautiful and most famous Bartolini models are the earliest ones with the sparkle celluloid coating and the mother-of-pearl fretboard. Since hardware evolved parallel with the early Welsons, vintage can be given with reasonable approximation without carbon 14:

• the red one, with its generic vibrato tailpiece and non-adjustable bridge, was made in 1962-63,
• the golden one, with its specific trem and an adjustable bridge, is from 1963-64,
• the blue one, with the deeper cutaway, is the final version of 1964.

L’origine di tutti i marchi di chitarre nelle Marche degli anni 60 è rintracciabile in un modo o nell’altro fra i tanti produttori di fisarmoniche che fiorivano nella zona. Tutti i marchi, ad eccezione di Bartolini.

Questo cognome non appare mai nelle dinastie locali dell’organetto. Sarebbe bello trovare qualche collegamento con Bill Bartolini, il liutaio californiano che si rese famoso negli anni 70 per I suoi pickup per bassi, ma non ce n’è.

Ciò che sapiamo è chè il (scarsamente leggibile) logo ‘BAR’ è l’acronimo per ‘Bartolini Alvaro, Recanati’, quindi che la ditta era come la Eko domiciliata a Recanati. Ci sono voluti anni per raggiungere questo livello di conoscenza. Non siamo ancora certi se ‘Alvaro’ era il primo nome del Signor Bartolini o (caso meno probabile) il cognome di qualche socio, ma lo sapremo qualche giorno, lo giuriamo.

Le più belle e le più famose Bartolini sono le primissime con celluloide a brillantini e tastiera madreperlata. Vista l’evoluzione dell’hardware parallela a quella delle prime Welson, la datazione si può fare con approssimazione accettabile senza carbonio 14:

• la rossa, con il suo vibrato generico e il ponte non regolabile, risale al 1962-63,
• quella oro, con vibrato specifico e ponte regolabile, sarà stata costruita nel 1963-64,
• quella blu, con la spalla mancante più scavata, è la versione finale del 1964.
