I’m Anders from Sweden. Thanks for a gorgeous
site, have never seen anything like some of those guitars. I play
guitar and use Hagström,
I have three, and they are great guitars but when it comes design
they are surpassed by these Italians, no doubt. But this wasn’t
my subject. The subject is Ranger amplifiers.
Ranger was (and maybe still is) the Guitar/Bass AMPLIFIER in East
and Central Africa, and now we talk mainly 70’s/80’s.
It’s reputation can not be compared to any other brand. Neither
Fender, MusicMan, Vox, Marshall, HiWatt, Laney, Yamaha nor any other
brand was seen as comparable. What was so outstanding was the reliability.
You could trust them (almost) 100 %. In these parts of Africa variations
in Voltage is common with both too little (not enough capacity in
the power lines) or too much (usage of motordriven generators). The
Rangers handled this, no problems. They took hard physical handling,
handled high humidity and could generally be trusted. I think the
sound quality was appreciated, though this was no main issue for
touring musicians but reliability was.
How do I know this. I have listended to African music for 30
years and seen those Rangers on so many sleeves over the years
and wondered why (at first I thought it was Orange amps). Nowadays
I have a number of friends who are African musicians which have played
professionally in Africa and they have confirmed this.
I wouldn’t
be surprised if there was an Italian-African link in guitars to.
