Klira Twen Star 162-2/3

The hottest fiddle bass ever made! Klira’s designers certainly had fun inventing that converse shape where angles become smooth and curves turn pointy. Must have been some kind of joke in the beginning… This special configuration is extremely rare and very much sought after.

Il più pazzesco dei bassi violino! Al reparto progettazione di Klira si saranno divertiti a ideare questa sagoma alla rovescia con angoli che diventano curve e vice-versa. Tutto ciò è forse partito da qualche scherzo… Questa configurazione speciale è rarissima, e molto ricercata.

Besides the crazy body shape, two other features differ from the standard version: the bridge has a bone saddle, and the tuners have perloid buttons. Strangely, both bridge and machineheads are exactly the same on the 1965 versions of the Eko 995 violin bass. Those tuners were also fitted on Crucianelli basses of 1964 and all Eko basses of 1964/1965 but they are are rarely seen on German basses, aside from a few Framus and other Klira models. Not only there is no logo, but also no engraving on the  tailpiece. From now on all the special 162-2 basses to come are no-name. Why?…

Corpo bizarro, il ponte ha la selletta in osso e le chiavette hanno i bottoni perlinati. Stranamente sono esattamente lo stesso ponte e le stesse chiavette presenti sui bassi viola Eko 995 dal 1965. Queste chiavette erano  usate anche da Crucianelli nel 1964 e da Eko per i bassi dal dal 1964-65 ma appaiono raramente sui bassi tedeschi, a parte pochi modelli Framus e altri di Klira. Non c’è nessun logo sulla paletta, neppure una incisione ‘Klira’ sull’attaccacorde. Ormai tutti gli altri bassi speciali 162-2 saranno anonimi. Perchè?…

A further evolution of the crazy Twen Star 162-2. The catseye soundholes are now substitued with sharp slits that perfectly complement the wild radicality of the body design. The headstock has still the standard shape, but not for long.

Nuova evoluzione del pazzesco Twen Star 162-2. Le buche a virgola sono ormai sostituite con strette fessure che si armonizzano perfettamente con la radicalità barbarica del corpo. La paletta ha ancora la forma standard, ma per poco tempo.

three-star inlay, 20 frets

All Twen Star basses have nineteen frets (not counting the zero-fret) but this one has twenty. Another difference from all previous configurations is the headstock shape, whose design seems to prefigure the bolt-on neck version of 1967/1968. The 20th fret suggest a premium status that is contradicted by the smaller tuners. Weird.

Tutti i bassi Twen Star hanno 19 tasti (non contando il tasto zero) ma questo ne ha 20. Un altra differenza con tutte le precedenti configurazioni è la sagoma della paletta che sembra prefigurare la versione con manico avvitato del 1967-68. Il 20° tasto suggerisce uno status più lussuoso, contraddetto dalle chiavette più leggere. Strano.

three-star inlay, economy tuners

From my own collection, another representative of the 20-fret sup-species with a different headstock. All original, including the gigbag. The small tuners are the same you see on cheap Klira solid bodied basses of the years 1962/1965 (i.e. the vinyl covered Arkansas series). Il love the way the lacquering is shaded to underline the unusual profiling of the body side. This bass is the lightest in weight I have ever seen: only 2.17 kgs, 4-3/4 lbs.

Dalla mia collezione, un altro rappresentante della sottospecie con 20 tasti e la paletta differente. Tutto originale, anche la custodia. Le piccole chiavette sono le stesse che si vedono sui bassi economici Klira del periodo 1952-65 (come le solidbodies Arkansas coperte da vinile). Mi piace come la verniciatura sia sfumata per sottolineare l’insolita sagomatura dei lati. Non ho mai visto un basso così leggero: solo 2,17 chili.

A chromosomic recombination of the standard Klira 162 bass with the 162-2 type. Definitely insane! Very rare but often copied in Japan. The catalogue issued in early 1966 shows it with a raised logo on body. It also says that all-metal tuning machines could be optionally fitted for a surcharge amount.

Ricombinazione cromosomica del Klira 162 normale con il tipo 162-2. Decisamente demenziale! Rarissimo, ma sovente copiato in Giappone. Il catalogo dall’inizio del 66 lo rappresenta con un logo in rilievo sul corpo. Rivela anche che le chiavette tutte in metallo erano un opzione con sovrapprezzo.
