Klira Twen Star 162-1

Spearhead inlay, large logo

The photos are not fantastic but this bass is. All original, with a big raised logo that is typical for many Klira of 1965. I think that the spearhead inlay is characteristic of the earliest Twen Stars but it’s impossible to prove. Klira used to build instruments with different features at the same time, which makes difficult to tell the direction of evolutions.

Spearhead inlay, no logo

All original except for the truss-rod plate, which is normally an anonymous piece of black plastic. The absence of a logo on the headstock might be original, many Kliras of that era left the factory without any (nevermind anyway, the maker’s name is engraved on the tailpiece). The peculiar profile of the headstock, with sharper lower corners, is only seen with the small spearhead inlay.

Double spearhead inlay, no logo

This is the standard headstock shape for the years 1965-1966. Instead of a celluloid foil the black colour on headstock is a painted finish that is almost always crazed lenghwise. Here we can see that it is not really black, it looks rather like a translucent dark grey.

Double pearhead inlay, raised logo

The double spearhead is the rarest of all headstock inlays. The narrow space left for the logo looks awkward to say the least. On the other hand the one-piece back is made of a gorgeous figured cross-flamed maple.

three stars inlay, small decal logo

All Twen Stars with a three-star inlay I have seen have that decal logo made of a thin golden foil (that easily rubs off). The tuners are a Van Ghent model similar to the one used by Eko in the years 1964/1965, but here with all metal buttons that are almost exclusively specific to the Twen Star series (and only to the Twen Stars with a regular fiddle shape).

diamond inlay, small decal logo

The diamond inlay is by far the most frequent. There are reasons to suppose that it came later than the spearheads in that series but with Klira one never knows.

diamond inlay, two-piece back (1966)

Here we have a Twen Star bass of which we can be sure that it has been built later than all those previously reviewed: the back is made of two pieces, a feature usually associated to the following generations with chrome pickups.
