Crucianelli in the ES 335 style

1963, the earliest version

An incredible find, discovered under unbelievable circumstances… In April 2003 our friend Per Larsson of Sweden salvaged it at the garbage station of Uppsala as he noticed a man about to dump an old canvas guitar bag with some instrument inside. He asked to have a look, and so he got this extremely rare early semi-acoustic Élite. Until he mailed us the pics I didn’t even suppose such a thing could exist. The hollow body without f-holes is not the world’s finest, and the simply rectangular control panel with the rocker switches is a somewhat hasty design, to say the least. This guitar is the kind of beauty only a mother would love. Aside from that it is an unvaluable piece of history. Hardware is all there and all original as far as we can see. Pickups, bridge, machineheads with translucent plastic buttons and black plastic truss-rod plate are consistent with the solidbody Crucianellis that combine an old style headstock with newer pickups (this one for instance). It dates back the guitar in 1964, possibly late 1963.

Two innovations appear here for the first time. A short-lived one is the weird vibrato assembly with an extra-long bar (here missing), similar to a contemporeous Eko design (both being imitated from a device launched by Framus in 1962). It was to be discarded as soon as 1965. The fretboard was promised to a much brighter future. Quite specific with its large square block inlays (one at fret one and only two beyond the octave), it has been mounted on all Crucianelli semi-acoustics through 1964-1966 as well as on many Vox models. From 1966 on it has been taken over by Eko and was still in use in the late 70′s on the Eko Ranger XII acoustic series.

The pickguard, never seen on any other Crucianelli, extends over the lower horn just like the successive batwing model and yet has a softly rounded profile that closely prefigures the version introduced in 1965. It makes me think of some Jurassic pterosaur that would not yet have made up its mind to evolve towards birds or mammalians and therefore carries both sets of genes in its DNA.

In our Florentine gallery there is another example (also located in Sweden) of archaic Crucianelli semi-acustic guitar, with same push-button controls and same headstock design.
