Hagström I / Kent

1962 Futurama II Deluxe

English

A really old one. We can forgive the non-original bridge and the missing string pins (as frequently happens) of the Tremar tailpiece. The stamped lettering “Made by Hagström Sweden“ distinguishes the oldest version of this vibrato device

Headstock shape looks like a strangely clumsy copy of a Fender design. The softly curvaceous profile was possibly chosen taking into account the finishing technique, with a thick heat moulded celluloid sheet that doesn’t lend itself to sharp angles and deep concavities

Italiano

1962 Futurama bass

English

This bass is from the VERY first production batch. Maybe not the prettiest one ever, not yet (restauration in progress). But if you own a Kent bass or guitar with a lower serial number you are welcome to mail us the pics — thanks!

Still in 1962 small guitar machineheads were of general use on European basses (all were short-scale, around 30“ or 760 mm). During 1963 most makers (Crucianelli, Egmond, Eko, Höfner, Hopf etc.) suddenly introduced real bass tuners. We suppose that none were available until then on the European market.

One can see clearly that the Futurama logo is actually back printed on an clear adhesive label.

Italiano

1962/63 Futurama II Deluxe

English

Gorgeous example of an early Kent with brass frets and Gibson-style nut. All original and flawless. I wish we had much better pics.
On a sizeable minority (roughly 25%) of first generation Kent guitars the aluminium cheese grater shows a blue or red tinge that matches body finish. The earliest Hagström Standard/Deluxe of 1959 showed the same phenomenon, before the colour variety of their graters was restricted to gold and anodized natural.
Unused supplies of red and blue aluminium grills have thus found a use on early Kent guitars. Hagström never allowed anything to be wasted!

Italiano
